Microsoft Teams Phone turns Teams into your business telephone system, with real numbers that can be dialled from outside, call routing, hold queues and voicemail. It replaces a traditional PBX. Staff take calls on the app they already use for meetings and chat, on a laptop, a mobile or a desk handset.
Can we keep our existing telephone numbers?
Yes, in most cases. Existing geographic numbers can usually be ported to Teams Phone from a South African provider, which takes a few weeks and is scheduled so that calls are never unreachable during the switch. Numbers tied to certain legacy services occasionally cannot be ported, and that is confirmed before anything is committed.
What happens to calls when the internet goes down?
Calls route to a configured fallback, most commonly staff mobile numbers, so the business stays reachable. This is set up at deployment rather than discovered during an outage. A site with a single unreliable connection should have a secondary link if voice matters to the business.
